Tonneau covers

Measure the bed before you order the tonneau: how to cut wrong-fit returns

More tonneau covers come back for the wrong bed length than for any other reason. Almost every one of those returns starts the same way: someone reads a number off a brochure, or off the badge on the tailgate, and orders against it. The badge tells you the trim. It does not tell you the bed.

Same truck, different beds

A 2021 F-150 can leave the factory with a 5′6″, a 6′5″ or an 8′ bed. A Ram 1500 can be 5′7″ or 6′4″, and the RamBox option changes the usable width on top of that. Two trucks with identical badges can need completely different covers. That is why the measurement, not the model name, is the number that decides what fits.

The measuring routine

  1. Close the tailgate. The cover seals against it closed, not open.
  2. Stand at the front of the bed, at the bulkhead.
  3. Run a tape along the floor of the bed, from the inside face of the bulkhead to the inside face of the closed tailgate.
  4. Read it in inches and write it on the order. That number is the bed length.

Measure inside the bed, never outside. The outside of the box includes the bodywork and reads several inches long — exactly the mistake that sends a cover back.

Matching the number to the listing

Our beds are listed in both formats: the nominal size everyone quotes and the actual measurement in inches — a 6′8″ bed, for example, is listed as 81.9″. If the tape lands squarely between two listed sizes, call the trade line on 780-909-2222 before ordering; there is usually a reason, and it is usually a trim variant we can identify from the year and model.

Make it part of the sale

Put the measured bed length on every tonneau order, next to the year, make and model. It takes five minutes at the truck and saves a return, a second trip for the customer, and a week without a cover.

If the fit is still wrong

If the order carried the measurement and the cover still does not fit, that is covered by our fitment assurance. Returns run through an RA number — see returns and credits for how it works. Then read which tonneau styles to stock to match the cover to the customer.
