Tonneau covers

Tonneau covers: which styles to stock, and how to match them at the counter

We carry four Titan tonneau styles across 113 truck-bed fitments. A customer walking up to your counter usually asks which one is best. The honest answer is that they solve different problems — and a shop that matches the cover to how the customer actually uses the bed sells more covers and takes fewer back.

The four styles, and who each one is for

Soft roll-up

The lowest price point and the quickest to get completely out of the way. Unlatch, roll it to the bulkhead, strap it, and the whole box is open with nothing overhanging.

The trade: the least security. A soft cover is a deterrent, not a lock. It will not hold weight on top, and in deep cold the vinyl stiffens up.

Sell it to: the customer who opens the bed constantly and leaves nothing valuable in it.

Soft tri-fold

Folds forward in three panels rather than rolling. Faster to open partway, tidier when folded, and a cleaner look on the truck.

The trade: the folded stack sits at the bulkhead and takes a little bed length. Same security limits as any soft cover.

Sell it to: mixed use — partial access more often than full access.

Hard tri-fold

Rigid panels. A real step up in security and looks, it takes a light load on top, and it copes far better with wind at highway speed and snow sitting on it.

The trade: heavier, higher priced, and the folded panels take more of the bed than a soft fold.

Sell it to: the customer who leaves things in the bed and wants to worry about it less.

Hard flip-back

The most secure and the most solid-feeling of the four. Locks down properly and looks like part of the truck.

The trade: the highest price point, and the slowest to get fully out of the way when the whole box is needed.

Sell it to: tools, gear, and anything the customer would rather not explain to an insurer.

The two questions that pick the cover

At the counter, you only need two answers: how often do you open the bed, and what do you leave in it. Open it constantly, carry nothing valuable — soft roll-up. Leave tools in it — hard. Everything in between is a tri-fold.

Set the expectation before the sale, not after

None of the four is waterproof. All four are water-resistant: they keep weather off a load in ordinary driving and rain, but in a serious storm or through a jet wash, water finds the seals. None of them turns a bed into a safe, either — a hard cover with a good lock is a deterrent, not a vault.

Say that out loud when you sell the cover. A customer who expected a sealed box brings it back; a customer who was told the truth does not.

The biggest source of tonneau returns

It is not the style — it is the bed length. A badge on the tailgate does not tell you the bed. Our guide to measuring a truck bed before you order takes five minutes and removes most wrong-fit returns.

Ordering

Every cover is catalogued by year, make, model and bed length, so you can order by the truck in front of you. Look it up in the tonneau cover range, or call the trade line on 780-909-2222 and we will match it with you.
