The HD617 is the broadest winter tire we stock: twenty-four sizes covering 15 through 20 inch rims, in T, H and V speed ratings, every one of them an XL load rating. If a customer drives a sedan, a crossover or a mid-size SUV, the odds are their size is on this shelf.

It is the default recommendation for someone who wants a proper winter tire without paying for performance they will not use. Straightforward tread, full size run, and enough load capacity for a loaded family vehicle.

Choosing the right one

Start here if the vehicle is an ordinary sedan, crossover or mid-size SUV and the driver is not asking for anything special. If they want more grip at speed, look at the HD687 or HD697. If it is a van, a light truck or anything that carries weight, the HD657 is the right answer.

Questions we get asked

When should winter tires go on?
The rule of thumb in Alberta is seven degrees. Below that a summer or all-season compound starts to harden and lose grip, and that happens well before the first snow. Most people book the changeover through October.

How do I know what size I need?
Read it off the sidewall of the tire on your vehicle right now — it looks like 225/65R17. Match that exactly. If you are changing sizes, talk to us first; the wrong diameter throws out your speedometer.

Do you install and balance?
Yes, in-house at our Edmonton shop, including TPMS service. Tires bought here are mounted, balanced and torqued by us — book it when you order.

What does the number and letter after the size mean?
That is the load index and speed rating, for example 97T. The number is how much weight one tire can carry; the letter is its rated top speed. Both are listed on every size. If you tow, the load number is the one that matters.

Do I need four, or will two do?
Four. Two winter tires on one axle and two hardened all-seasons on the other gives you a car that grips at one end and not the other, which is worse than four of the same.
